Spore & Explore: Mushroom Intensive

Mycocurious? Get out into the woods

Step into the forest and into a deeper relationship with the fungal world—spend four weekends immersed in the magic, mystery, and medicine of mushrooms.

You won’t find any program comparable to this on the west coast!

Who This Program Is For

Have you always wanted to explore the fabulous world of fungi but don’t know where to start?

Have you ever wished you knew how to safely find edible, medicinal, and useful mushrooms?

Are you curious how to cultivate mushrooms at home?

Wildwood Folk School is offering a four weekend mushroom intensive that is accessible and useful for beginner foragers and veterans alike.

“Coming every month, being inspired to notice and become more aware and follow patterns and start to really truly see relationships. That’s what this class has taught me.”

Camas D.

Students will:

  • Deepen their understanding of mycology
  • Learn how to find, identify and use (or avoid) various mushrooms
  • Join a community of mushroom enthusiasts

“I love how easy it is to learn from Shelby. They’re funny, entertaining, and make the material relevant by personifying plants and exploring each ecosystem’s perspective. This approach helps me relate the lessons to my own experiences and broadens my view beyond a human-centered outlook. The classes are a blast—everyone’s ‘nerdy’ about mushrooms and other fascinating topics. I felt I got my money’s worth after the first few sessions; everything since then has been an added bonus.”

Meet Your Guides:

Shelby Lynn

Shelby has been teaching about the unique ecology of the Pacific Northwest since 2005. Their passion for habitat restoration, permaculture principles, and collective liberation fuels a teaching style that is both engaging and transformative. Drawing on experience from institutions such as the Sitka Center for Arts & Ecology and community-led organizations like Rosehip Collective, Shelby will guide you to see the land through an ecological lens—shifting your focus from a human-centric perspective to a broader, more interconnected worldview.

Lago

Lago is a Holistic Nutritionist, chef, community herbalist, and abortion doula living on Wapato Island, ancestral lands of the Multnomah, Chinook, and Kalapuya peoples. With roots in the Chorotega and Nicarao Indigenous Peoples of Nicaragua and Polish Slavic ancestry, Lago’s approach to food is deeply animist—seeing each ingredient, tool, and process as alive and co-creative. Trained at The Wellspring School for Healing Arts, they bring a unique blend of Eastern and Western nutrition to their work. Their passion lies in helping others reconnect with land, lineage, and self through cooking and shared meals.

Reishi Strauss

Reishi Strauss is an herbalist, mycologist, and medicine maker born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern Virginia. Reishi has studied herbal science, botany, clinical herbalism, and ecological stewardship at Bastyr University and the Columbine’s School of Botanical Studies. She owns and operates Earth & Spirit Botanicals — an herbal elixir bar and medicinal mushroom-focused apothecary — intended to heal the planet & her people with sustainably wildcrafted and regeneratively cultivated herbal & fungal medicines from the Cascadia Bioregion. Reishi seeks to be in symbiotic interspecies relationships with the plants, fungi, insects, bacteria, animals, humans, minerals, and many other lifeforms whom we co-habitate with this beautiful planet Earth.

Rascal Turbeville

Raskal is a lover, observer, and maker of ecology with a specific focus in the world of fungi. Since relocating from California to Washington he has been immersed in the study and practice of mushroom cultivation, foraging, and appreciation. Raskal’s efforts in the field of mycology involves breaking down the stigma associated with fungi and learning how we can integrate their lessons into our communities. His work consists of permaculture consultation, land management, soil microbiology, compost science, entomology, mushroom cultivation for food, medicine, and remediation, along with facilitating education surrounding these practices.

Cin Thomas

Cin is on the board of the Oregon Mycological society, and has been an active member for about 7 years, leading forays, and teaching classes. Her journey with mushrooms has not been unlike mycelium: growing, learning, expanding, supporting, and communicating underground.

Cin’s goal is to share her knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion for all things fungi and connect with a broader audience. She loves developing recipes, studying species, making medicine, leading forays, photographing, making art, and just hanging out and appreciating mushrooms.–
